Parking

Parking rules change depending upon the road and the place. Always watch for and obey parking signs.

Basic parking rules:
  1. Never park on the part of a road where traffic is flowing. Drive off the road onto the shoulder if you have to stop.
  2. Never park at a place where you do not have a clear view for at least 50 meters in both directions.
  3. Do not park where you will block a vehicle already parked or where you will block a sidewalk, crosswalk, pedestrian crossing or road entrance.
  4. Do not park close to a public entrance to a hotel, theatre or public hall when it is open to the public.
  5. Do not park near an intersection or a round-about.
  6. Do not park where you will get in the way of traffic.
  7. Look around and make sure before opening the door of your parked vehicle. Close the door as soon as you can.
  8. Part your vehicle on the left side in the direction of the traffic.
  9. Pull the handbrake.

After parking your vehicle, always turn off the ignition and the lights, remove the key and lock the door to stop theft.

Before moving from a parked position, always signal and check for traffic, pulling out only when it is safe to do so.

Do not leave children in the vehicle.

Parallel parking
Parallel parking means parking vehicles in a line, front to rear, next to the left side of the road. For parallel parking on the left-hand side of the road, find a parking area that is about one and half times longer than your vehicle. Check the traffic beside and behind through your mirrors and over the shoulder and signal to alert other drivers.

Drive alongside the vehicle ahead of the empty space, leaving about a meter between the vehicles. Stop when your rear bumper is in line with the other vehicle.

Parallel parking

  1. Slowly reverse into the space, turning the steering wheel anti-clockwise. Make sure you have cleared the vehicle ahead.
  2. When you can see the outside rear corner of the vehicle in front of your space, turn the steering wheel clockwise. Look back so that you do not hit the vehicle already parked behind you.
  3. Bring your vehicle in line with the curb.
  4. If your vehicle is not parallel to the curb, drive forward to straighten. Make sure the wheels of the car are straight.
  5. When you are properly parked, pull the handbrake and shift into first or reverse gear. Turn off the engine. Remove the key from the ignition.
  6. Check traffic before opening your door. Close the window and lock your vehicle.

Angular parking

Angular parking is parking the vehicle at an angle to the curb of the road.

  1. Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder for traffic behind you.
  2. Give left indicator to signal that you intend to park the vehicle.
  3. Steer into the parking space and straighten the wheels.
  4. Keep equal distance on both sides, pull the handbrake and shift into first or reverse gear. Exit:
  1. Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder, if the way is clear reverse slowly. Make sure there is no vehicle, take extra care of cycles, rickshaws and pedestrians.

Perpendicular parking

Perpendicular parking is parking at right angle of the road curb. Reverse the vehicle in the parking space so that you can exit easily.

  1. Pass ahead of the vehicle next to available space.
  2. Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder for clear traffic.
  3. Turn the steering anti-clockwise and reverse slowly until you are in the centre of the parking space.
  4. Close the window and lock your vehicle.

Exit:

Move the vehicle very slowly so that you get a clear view of the road. Look on both sides, indicate and move the vehicle out.

Parking at night

Try to park the vehicle in a lighted place. Turn the parking light on, if it is dark.

DO NOT PARK:

  1. On a foot path
  2. Near traffic crossing, round-about or a turn.
  3. On the main road.
  4. Where your vehicle obstructs traffic.
  5. On wrong side of the road.
  6. Where parking is prohibited.

Precautions while passing parked vehicles

1. Be attentive while passing by a parked vehicle. Some absent minded driver or passenger might open the door without looking.
2. A child might be playing and can come in front of you.

Roadside stop

If you have to stop by the side of the road, make sure the stop is as short as it can be.

  1. Signal that you want to pull over and check your mirrors and blind spot to see when the way is clear.
  2. Steer to the side of the road, stopping close to the curb or edge of the road.
  3. Put the four way emergency lights on.
  4. Apply handbrakes.
